He was one of John Cassavetes’ favorite actors. He just died in New-York at age 81.
It was in “Husbands” (1970), directed by Cassavetes, that along with Peter Falk, he really made an impression as an unhappily married man out for a drunken night on the town.
As Ben Gazzara wrote in his autobiography, “In the Moment” (2004), the on-camera camaraderie was so convincing that people assumed the three men had been lifelong friends; in fact they had barely known one another when the filming began, though they became friends during it.
For the maverick director, Gazzara played a collection of bitter spouses and down-on-their heels gamblers and theater directors, in films such as “The Killing of a Chinese Bookie” and “Opening Night.”
Among his other notable film roles were an accused rapist in “Anatomy of a Murder” (1959), the smooth-talking pornographer Jackie Treehorn in the Coen Brothers’ “The Big Lebowski” (1998), and a grandfather separating from his wife of 40 years in Todd Solondz’s “Happiness”(1998).
Less successful was his starring role opposite his then-lover Audrey Hepburn in Peter Bogdanovich’s “They All Laughed” (1981). The romantic comedy was a box office and critical disaster.
On stage, Gazzara originated the role of the alcoholic, sexually confused Brick in Tennessee Williams’ “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.” It helped make his name, but he saw the role go to Paul Newman in the 1958 film adaptation.
He also starred as an alcoholic Italian writer in Marco Ferreri’s Tales of Ordinary Madness (1981).
While linked aesthetically with Cassavetes and independent-minded films, Gazzara played in mainstream movie roles such as Road House (1989), starring Patrick Swayze. He more recently co-starred in the remake of The Thomas Crown Affair.
“I turned down so many movies because I was idealistic,” he once said. “If I had the same chances today, I would take them all because you never know where it will lead.”
A native of New York’s Lower East Side, Gazarra won an Emmy in 2003 for his supporting role in HBO’s Hysterical Blindness and was nominated for NBC’s An Early Frost (1985).
He was nominated for three Tony awards for playing a drug addict in “A Hatful of Rain,” for doing double duty in two short plays Eugene O’Neill’s “Hughie” and David Scott Milton’s “Duet,” and for playing the alcoholic George in a revival of “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf.”

L’Affiche Rouge: pour ne jamais oublier! November 27, 2011
Henri KARAYAN était l’avant-dernier survivant du groupe de Résistants créé par Missak MANOUCHIAN.
Il s’est éteint le 02 novembre 2011, et avec lui s’estompe progressivement le souvenir de l’Affiche Rouge, celui de ces 23 membres des FTP-MOI (Franc-Tireurs Partisans Main d’Oeuvre Internationale), qui furent exécutés par les Nazis, le 21 février 1944, au Mont Valérien.
Le groupe créé par Missak Manouchian s’était illustré dans de nombreuses actions contre l’envahisseur allemand, avant que 23 d’entre eux ne soient arrêtés et fusillés. L’Affiche Rouge réunissant le visage de dix de ces hommes, fut placardée dans les rues de Paris, avant ou après leur assassinat, selon des versions qui varient, et fut utilisée par la propagande allemande qui stigmatisa l’origine étrangère de ceux qu’ils nommaient les terroristes.
Henri Karayan était né en 1921 à Istambul, d’une famille arménienne qui avait échappé au génocide de 1915.
Arsène TCHAKARIAN, 95 ans, est désormais le dernier survivant du groupe MANOUCHIAN.
2012 US campaign: will Hollywood go on supporting Obama? September 23, 2011
President Barack Obama is flying to Los Angeles next Monday… to raise money for his campaign, but lately Hollywood has been reluctant on supporting the President .
President Obama will be meeting his generous “supporters” at the House of Blues, where tickets to attend are being sold between 250$ and 10,000$, and 35,800 a couple at Fig & Olive, but he also comes to check on the traditional generosity of Hollywood, which he may find a chillier place than usual.
Although the entertainment business continues to be a major source of financial support for the President’s re-election, some strong 2008 supports as Bill Maher, Jon Stewart, Robert Redford or Matt Damon have made it clear about their deception, and about what they see as the President’s failures on everything from education to the environment, and the US military engagements, to his basic leadership abilities.
“I really think he misinterpreted his mandate,” Damon, who appeared at rallies for Obama in 2008, told CNN’s Piers Morgan recently. “A friend of mine said to me the other day, and I thought it was a great line, ‘I no longer hope for audacity.’”
Some have not mentioned yet wether they would support Obama, as they had done in 2008, or not… like George Lucas, Barbra Streisand, Leonardo Di Caprio, George Clooney, Jennifer Aniston, Tom Hanks, Warner Bros. Pictures President Jeff Robinov, or Robert De Niro who had not hesitated in 2008 to join then candidate Obama on the campaign trail .
Obama needs these supports and his trip to Hollywood is not only to attend some pricey ticket events, but also to wake up the industry moguls and their people…
After all, employees at Comcast comprise the biggest block of Obama contributors with nearly $200,000 given to the campaign, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.
Other top clusters of Obama givers include the Creative Artists Agency ($111,900), DreamWorks SKG ($107,400) and Sony Corp. ($95,900).
Los Angeles is the top giving metropolitan area for the re-election effort, having shelled out a total of $5.2 million through June.
But this time, so intense is the disappointment, that some people think that there could be an ideological shift in the Industry.
By focusing on the economy, and leaving social issues like abortion, gay rights, education, Death penalty, on the back burner, Obama might have lost some figures in the entertainment business.
The real question is wether Obama can afford losing these supports or not… and the answer is more likely to be no, as he proves it with this first visit to Hollywood for fund raising, which might be the first in many to come.

Le Président Barack Obama se rendra lundi prochain à Los Angeles … pour lever des fonds pour sa campagne, mais ces derniers temps, Hollywood n’a pas vraiment manifesté son soutien au President.
Le Président Obama rencontrera ses généreux donateurs, au cours de de deux événements organisés à la House of Blues, où ils devront s’acquitter d’un droit d’entrée qui s’échelonnera de 250$ à 10,000$, allant jusqu’à 35,800 pour un couple, au restaurant Fig & Olive… Le President prendra la température de la traditionnelle générosité Hollywoodienne, qu’il pourrait trouver un peu fraîche cette fois-ci.
Même si l’industrie cinématographique demeure une source importante de soutien financier pour les démocrates, quelques soutiens célèbres, comme Bill Maher, Jon Stewart, Robert Redford ou Matt Damon n’ont pas hésité à manifester leur déception, et à critiquer ouvertement la politique du Président Obama, sur des thèmes qui leurs sont chers, comme l’éducation, l’environnement, l’engagement militaire américain, mais aussi sur le bilan global de sa politique.
“Je crois vraiment qu’il s’est trompé sur son mandat” a déclaré Matt Damon, qui avait soutenu publiquement Obama en 2008. “Un ami m’a dit récemment, et je crois que c’était très juste, ‘Je n’espère plus aucune audace’ “.
Certains n’ont pas encore annoncé s’ils apporteraient ou pas, leur soutien à Obama, comme ils l’avaient fait en 2008… George Lucas, Barbra Streisand, Leonardo Di Caprio, George Clooney, Jennifer Aniston, Tom Hanks, le Président de Warner Bros. Pictures Jeff Robinov, ou même Robert De Niro, qui s’était beaucoup impliqué en 2008, sont restés très discrets.
Obama ne peut pas se permettre de perdre ces soutiens, et son déplacement à Hollywood, n’est pas uniquement pour assister à deux événements organisés par son état-major de campagne, mais aussi et surtout pour réveiller les grands noms de l’”industrie” et leur personnel…
Après tout les employés de Comcast ont été les plus gros donateurs en 2008, avec $200,000 rassemblés pendant la campagne, d’après le Centre d’analyse politique (CRP), 111,900 $ chez Creative Artists Agency, 107,400$ pour DreamWorks SKG, et 95,900$ pour Sony Corp.
Los Angeles a déjà rassemblé 5.2 million de dollars dans l’effort de campagne pour 2012, se hissant à la tête des dons provenant des grands ville américaines.
Mais cette fois-ci, la déception est forte, et pourrait l’emporter sur le soutien traditionnellement apporté par Hollywood aux Démocrates, au point de basculer idéologiquement, comme certains le pensent ici.
En s’intéressant davantage aux questions financières et économiques, qu’aux questions sociales comme l’avortement, les droits des homosexuels, l’éducation, ou la peine de mort, Obama risque d’avoir perdu définitivement quelques soutiens traditionnels de l’industrie cinématographique.
La vraie question est maintenance de savoir si Obama peut se permettre de perdre ces soutiens ou pas… et la réponse semble être non, si l’on en juge par ce premier déplacement effectué à Hollywood, par le President Obama en campagne, et qui pourrait en annoncer beaucoup d’autres à venir.
